The Automation Engineering Intern is responsible for hands-on development, integration, and testing of automation and control solutions for fluid handling systems in a lab-based, agile environment. This role will rapidly iterate with a cross‑functional engineering team, building, wiring, troubleshooting electro‑mechanical systems, and supporting control loop implementation and documentation.
This position is part of the R&D Organization located in Marlborough, MA and will be an on-site role.
What you will do:
- Develop, integrate, and test automation and control systems in a hands‑on lab environment
- Build, wire, and troubleshoot electro‑mechanical systems including pumps, valves, actuators, and instrumentation
- Assist with control loop implementation and tuning for flow, pressure, and level applications
- Support sprint‑based, agile development with rapid iteration and clear technical documentation
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, automation, and application engineering teams
Who you are:
- Pursuing a degree in Automation, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field
- Strong fundamentals in electro‑mechanical and fluid systems, including pumps, valves, sensors, and actuators
- Basic understanding of feedback control systems and PID control concepts
- Comfortable working hands‑on in a lab‑centric, experimental environment
- Able to learn quickly and contribute effectively in small, collaborative, sprint‑driven teams
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
- Exposure to industrial automation platforms (e.g., Emerson DeltaV, Siemens) and core DCS/PLC concepts including control modules, function blocks, alarms, and batch or state‑based control
- Understanding of instrumentation signals (4–20 mA, digital I/O), industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, PROFIBUS), and basic diagnostics/troubleshooting
- Experience with lab testing, data logging, control system commissioning, or relevant biology/bioprocessing concepts
The hourly range for this role is $20.00 - $30.00. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future.
