About This Role
An Apprenticeship at Biogen is a pathway to a long-term career in the biopharmaceutical industry. The 24-month program combines hands-on work in our operations with classes at a partner community college, so you can continue building your skills while gaining real-world experience. Throughout the program, you will be supported by customized on-the-job training and mentorship from trusted and experienced members of your team.
The Electrical Maintenance Apprentice supports the operation, maintenance, and reliability of critical electrical infrastructure within a manufacturing environment. This role focuses primarily on electrical systems such as switchgear, panelboards, power distribution, emergency generators, and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, with limited exposure to supporting HVAC and Utility related electrical components. Working under the guidance of experienced technicians, the apprentice helps ensure systems operate safely, reliably, and in compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards. This position provides hands-on training and technical development while supporting continuous facility and manufacturing operations.
What You’ll Do
- Assist with preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems including switchgear, panelboards, transformers, power distribution equipment, emergency generators, and UPS systems
- Support basic electrical diagnostics, inspections, and corrective maintenance under direct supervision
- Assist with lockout/tagout (LOTO), electrical safety practices, and compliance with established procedures
- Support electrical aspects of facility systems tied to HVAC and Utility equipment (e.g., motors, controls, power feeds) as needed
- Participate in hands-on technical training, documentation, and skill development activities
- Record maintenance activities and follow GMP, safety, and regulatory requirements
- Collaborate with electrical technicians, engineers, and facility teams to support uninterrupted manufacturing operations
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Who You Are
You are technically curious, safety-focused, and interested in building a career in industrial or facility electrical systems. You learn quickly, follow procedures closely, and work effectively as part of a skilled trades team.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Currently enrolled in, or willing to enroll within 30 days of hire, in a 2- or 4-year academic program
- Ability to commit and complete an apprenticeship program at Wake Tech
- Willingness to learn industrial electrical systems
- Ability to follow technical instructions, safety procedures, and established work practices
- Attention to detail and ability to complete documentation accurately
- Ability to work under close supervision in an operational manufacturing or facility environment
- Physical requirements:
- Ability to climb ladders, work in tight spaces, and lift/move equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Must be comfortable working in cleanroom environments with required gowning and able to stand for up to 3 hours at a time.
Preferred Skills
- Vocational or technical training in electrical systems, industrial maintenance, or a related field
- Exposure to electrical distribution systems, generators, UPS, or control panels
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance concepts or electrical safety standards
- Experience or interest in manufacturing, utilities, or regulated facility environments
Additional Information
Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.
