Job description
At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next.
On the Member Commerce team, we build highly visible, business-critical experiences such as account management, plan selection, upsells, and extra member flows. These surfaces directly shape how members join, stay, and get value from Netflix.
This role is a backend-dominant full-stack engineering position. Engineers in this role primarily design and build backend systems that power product experiences, while also contributing across the stack to deliver features end-to-end when needed.
You should not expect to work exclusively on backend systems in this role.
This hybrid role is based in Los Gatos, California, with in-office collaboration 2–3 days per week.
About the Role
This role is designed to strengthen backend ownership on a product-heavy team while maintaining the flexibility to deliver end-to-end features
Design and build backend systems that power Member Commerce experiences, including account management, upsells, and extra member flows
Own features end-to-end, from backend services and APIs through frontend integration and experimentation
Build reliable, scalable services (commonly Java-based) with a focus on correctness, performance, and iteration speed
Partner closely with Product Managers, Designers, Data Scientists, and Engineers to translate ideas into experiments and shipped features
Contribute to frontend development when needed (React, TypeScript), ensuring strong integration between UI and backend systems
Implement and analyze A/B tests, using data to inform product and engineering decisions
Participate in technical discussions around system design, tradeoffs, and long-term maintainability
Mentor other engineers and contribute to raising the technical bar across the team
What Sets You Apart
We’re looking for engineers who are deeply comfortable in backend systems, but who can also operate effectively across the full stack when needed.
You might be a great fit if you:
Have 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with strong backend focus
Are highly proficient in building backend services (Java or similar), including API design, data modeling, and service integration
Have experience working on product-facing systems, not just infrastructure or platform layers
Can comfortably navigate frontend codebases (React, TypeScript) and contribute when needed
Understand how frontend and backend decisions influence each other (performance, contracts, iteration speed)
Demonstrate strong ownership, from system design through production delivery
Take a pragmatic approach to tradeoffs, balancing speed, quality, and long-term maintainability
Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively across disciplines
Embody Netflix values such as judgment, candor, curiosity, and selflessness
What’s Different About Us
We work on product features directly seen by hundreds of millions of members worldwide
Backend engineers here are product engineers, not infrastructure-only engineers
We move fast and value experimentation - ideas go from concept to production in weeks
We prioritize cross-functional collaboration as much as technical depth
You’ll have autonomy to shape how systems are built while staying close to user impact
Inclusivity is something we embrace - diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and styles are celebrated. You can be your authentic self here, as we look for culture adds, not culture fits.
Generally, our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options.
