This role is based at our 'Ward Hill' site based in Haverhill, MA, supporting our Laboratory Chemicals Division, which manufactures reagents and chemicals used for a breadth of applications from life sciences research to drug discovery and manufacturing. Reporting to the Site Director, the EHS Specialist is a key site role responsible for driving safety initiatives and supporting our "Stop the Line" mindset. This role leads the deployment of Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) and Process Safety Management (PSM) programs to proactively reduce risk and ensure regulatory compliance.
The EHS Specialist operates at the center of the operation—partnering with Repackaging, Distribution, Inventory Control, Quality, and Facilities—to ensure safe execution, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement of EHS performance. The EHS Specialist will act as both a strategic change agent and hands-on operational leader, driving safety ownership to the shop floor while ensuring full compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies. This role combines strategic thinking with practical problem-solving to protect our colleagues, environment, and facilities while ensuring regulatory compliance and operational excellence.
1. Safety Leadership & Culture (Stop-the-Line Ownership)
Drive a visible, proactive safety culture aligned to site standards, where “We lead. We stop. We fix it—together.”
Lead Gemba-based safety engagement with frontline teams daily
Coach operational leaders on safety leadership behaviors and best practices
Own and deploy Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) program, including observation process, trend analysis, action closure discipline
2. Process Safety Management (PSM)
Lead implementation and sustainment of PSM systems across site operations
Partner with Engineering, Repack, and QC to ensure safe handling of hazardous materials and compliance in repack and chemical processing activities
Ensure process safety risks are identified, escalated, and mitigated proactively
3. Regulatory Compliance & Governance
Ensure full compliance with all applicable regulations, including OSHA, EPA, DOT, PHMS
Act as site lead for regulatory inspections and audits
Define and implement inspection preparedness standards
4. Emergency Response & Incident Management
Own and lead the Emergency Response Team (ERT)
Lead incident investigations (RCCM / PDCA)
Participate in and lead out-of-hours emergency response as required
5. Operational Integration & Continuous Improvement
Embed EHS into daily Tier 1–3 management systems (SQCDP)
Support PPI / Lean initiatives to improve safety and efficiency simultaneously
6. Training & Capability Building
Develop and deliver EHS training programs
Reinforce leader standard work (LSW) for safety ownership
Ensure all colleagues are trained, competent, and compliant
Regular presence in operational environments (Repack, DC, IC)
Exposure to chemical handling environments (with appropriate PPE)
Participation in on-call emergency response (including out-of-hours)
Ability to respond to site incidents as required
• Advanced degree plus 3 years of related experience, or bachelor's degree plus 5 years of related experience in EHS in manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or chemical industry settings
• Preferred Fields of Study: Occupational Safety & Health, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering
• Professional certifications strongly preferred: CSP, CIH, CRSP, or equivalent industry credentials
• Comprehensive knowledge of applicable EHS regulations, standards and management systems (OSHA, EPA, ISO 14001/45001)
• Strong technical expertise in industrial hygiene, chemical safety, hazardous materials, and environmental compliance
• Experience working with regulatory agencies and inspections
• Experience developing and delivering EHS training programs and leading safety initiatives
• Proven ability to conduct risk assessments, incident investigations, and audits
• Excellent project management and problem-solving skills
• Strong written and verbal communication abilities
• Proficiency with EHS software systems and Microsoft Office applications
• Experience with emergency response and business continuity planning
• Demonstrated success in organizational change initiatives
• Travel up to 25% may be required
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range estimated for this position based in Massachusetts is $83,300.00–$111,000.00.This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy.
