As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you’ll discover meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every single day to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, like protecting the environment, making sure our food is safe or helping find cures for cancer.
DESCRIPTION:
As a Manufacturing Engineer III at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will play a key role in supporting and optimizing fabrication processes, including sheet metal cutting, forming, and welding. You will drive process improvements, implement new technologies, and support automation initiatives to enhance safety, quality, and efficiency within fabrication operations.
In this role, you will provide technical expertise in fabrication methods, working closely with production teams to improve manufacturability, reduce variation, and increase throughput. You will support new product introductions by developing and validating fabrication processes, ensuring designs are optimized for manufacturability (DFM) with a focus on sheet metal and welded assemblies.
You will also lead and support continuous improvement and cost reduction (VA/VE) initiatives within fabrication, identifying opportunities to streamline operations, improve weld quality, reduce scrap, and enhance overall process capability. This may include evaluating and implementing automation solutions such as robotic welding systems or semi-automated fabrication equipment.
Working cross-functionally with R&D, Quality, Production, and other engineering teams, you will ensure fabrication processes meet all regulatory and quality requirements while maintaining efficient and scalable operations. Your hands-on engineering approach and problem-solving skills will be critical in addressing production challenges and improving fabrication performance.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Advanced Degree plus 3 years of experience, or Bachelor's Degree plus 5 years of experience in manufacturing engineering in regulated industries (pharmaceutical, medical device, or similar)
• Preferred Fields of Study: Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering or related field
• Strong experience in sheet metal fabrication processes, including cutting (laser, punch), forming (press brake), and welding (MIG, TIG, spot welding)
• Hands-on experience supporting fabrication floor operations and resolving production issues
• Experience with welding processes, weld design, and quality standards (AWS or similar preferred)
• Experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM), specifically for sheet metal and welded assemblies
• Exposure to fabrication automation, including robotic welding, automated cutting/forming systems, or material handling systems preferred
• Experience with industrial robots (welding robots strongly preferred) and basic PLC knowledge is a plus
• Familiarity with CNC machining processes and programming concepts is beneficial (not a primary requirement but transferable skills valued)
• Strong knowledge of GMP, ISO standards, and regulatory requirements
• Expertise in process validation, equipment qualification, and change control management
• Proficient in statistical analysis and continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma preferred)
• Demonstrated success implementing process improvements and cost reduction initiatives
• Strong project management skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams
• Experience with CAD software and manufacturing documentation systems
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, hands-on manufacturing environment
• Experience supporting engineers, technicians, and fabrication operators
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and relevant engineering software
• Ability to travel up to 20% as needed
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Experience with risk assessment methodologies and root cause analysis
• Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and tools
