Do you like working on industry-defining projects that leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and are used everyday by millions of customers worldwide across Alexa cloud and Echo devices? Then read on!
At Amazon, we hire the best minds in technology to innovate and build on behalf of our customers. The focus we have on our customers is why we are one of the world’s most beloved brands – customer obsession is part of our company DNA. Our Software Development Engineers (SDEs) use advanced AI technology, deep device-side knowledge and large-scale systems to solve complex problems. We get to see the impact of their work first-hand on millions of Echo devices worldwide.
We are looking for individuals who are passionate about creating new products, features, and services from scratch while managing ambiguity and the pace of a company where development cycles are measured in weeks, not years. If this sounds interesting to you, apply and come chart your own path at Amazon.
Key job responsibilities
- Design & Development: Design, develop, and maintain timer, alarm, and reminder features on Echo devices, ensuring reliability and low-latency performance. Own end-to-end delivery of medium-to-large features across the full software stack including firmware, middleware, and cloud integration. Develop and optimize on-device scheduling logic to ensure accurate triggering across device states including active, standby, and low-power modes.
- Technical Leadership: Drive technical design discussions and produce design documents for new features and system improvements. Identify and resolve ambiguity in requirements by collaborating with PMs, UX, and cross-functional partners. Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, design guidance, and knowledge sharing. Proactively identify technical debt and propose solutions to improve maintainability.
- System Reliability & Performance: Ensure high availability and fault tolerance including offline and network-degraded scenarios. Optimize memory, CPU, and power consumption for on-device processing. Implement robust error handling for edge cases such as device reboots, time zone changes, and DST transitions.
- Testing & Quality: Develop comprehensive unit, integration, and end-to-end test strategies. Participate in on-call rotations and drive root cause analysis for production issues. Conduct thorough code reviews to maintain quality standards.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Collaborate with Alexa cloud services teams for multi-device synchronization. Partner with voice/NLU teams to improve intent recognition for timer, alarm, and reminder utterances. Coordinate with hardware teams to optimize software within device constraints.
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
