We are seeking a Power Control Systems Engineer to help design and evolve new power control systems across multiple product features. You will be responsible for evolving the power control architecture deployed across Apple products to extend battery life and improve user experience while meeting device power and thermal constraints across multiple timescales. This work involves collecting and analyzing performance/power data from real-world workloads, applying and extending control theory and estimation techniques — including multi-timescale constraint handling — to novel system problems, driving data-driven and predictive approaches to power allocation, cooperating with systems and software teams to characterize and analyze power/performance profiles, and evaluating power control algorithms based on the resulting insights.
Design, implement, and evolve power control algorithms across multiple product features and platforms
Independently investigate performance/power data from real-world workloads to identify architecture and algorithm improvements
Apply and extend control theory and estimation techniques, including multi-timescale constraint handling, to novel system problems
Lead cross-functional characterization of power/performance profiles with systems and software teams
Prototype and evaluate data-driven and predictive approaches to power allocation
Debug and resolve complex power control issues across simulation, bench, and field environments
Mentor junior engineers on control system design and debug practices
BS degree
Experience with one or more of the following programing languages: MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, Bash, or Python
Experience with control system design in one or more of the following areas: Classical Control Theory, Modern Control Theory, System Identification, Estimation Theory, Signal Processing, or multi-timescale constraint handling
MS or PhD in Electrical/Computer Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent
10+ years of relevant industry experience
Experience implementing control systems in embedded microcontroller environments
Experience applying data-driven or machine-learning approaches to power allocation, predictive analytics, or constraint prediction
Experience with multi-timescale or hierarchical constraint-handling techniques in real-time control systems
Innovative and critical system-level thinker with control system design and debug skills
Desire to bring data-driven decision-making and analytics to improve our products
Professional and collaborative with interpersonal communication skills
