Join the power movement as a Mechanical Engineering Intern

We are looking for a talented Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our team! CFS interns are highly valued within the organization and placed into meaningful and challenging roles.

Program Details:

13-18 week internship

40-50 hours per week with set hourly salary based on year in school

Opportunities on site in Milpitas, CA. If an intern is going to be on site, you will be responsible for your own transportation and housing

Specific project assignments and required technical skillset will vary based on the team’s existing need.

Opportunities available for currently enrolled college students in all levels of schooling from bachelor’s degree to PhD

Interns must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer

What you'll do:

Mechanical Design & Engineering Analysis: Perform design CAD modeling, detail drafting, and fundamental engineering calculations to validate mechanical hardware

Build, Assembly & Testing: Hands-on fabrication, prototyping, hardware assembly, and physical testing/validation in the shop or lab

CAD & Digital File Organization: Organize CAD models, maintain standard component libraries, and clean up workspace file structures to ensure data is easy to navigate and reuse

Lab & Shop Housekeeping: Assist in setting up shop toolboxes, organizing incoming parts/inventory, and implementing physical organizational systems to maintain an efficient engineering workspace

What we’re looking for:

Pursuing an engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
3D CAD modeling and first-principles engineering calculations
Basic exposure to Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or engineering simulation tools.
Physical assembly, 3D printing/rapid prototyping, basic machining, and comfort in a shop or lab environment.
Active participation on hands-on student teams or campus roles (e.g., Formula SAE/Baja, Robotics/Combat Robotics, Rocketry, Aero/DBF, Solar Car, or Machine Shop staff).
Mindset for managing both physical shop inventory (toolboxes, part tracking) and digital data (CAD libraries, file structures).

Must-have Requirements:

Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally

Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time

Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics

Rates are aligned to your current year in school, ensuring equitable and consistent pay across our intern program.

For BS interns, the hourly rate is $25–$32

For MS/PhD interns, the rate is $35–$38
