How to apply to Meta (the 2-to-3 month process, explained)

Guide · Updated 2026-10-04

To apply to Meta, submit your résumé at metacareers.com. Meta runs its own careers site, not Greenhouse, Workday, or Lever. Check the role's minimum qualifications first: Meta lets you apply to more than one role but keeps only one résumé per applicant. For software engineers the process is a recruiter call, a 45-minute technical screen, then a full loop of 4 to 6 interviews of 45 minutes each, covering coding, design, and behavioral. Meta says the process usually takes about 2 to 3 months. Browse the open roles on applinity's Meta company page.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Find the role. Search metacareers.com, or use the full list of Meta's open US roles on applinity. The live count is on the company page.
  2. Check the minimum qualifications. Meta's hiring-process page tells applicants to confirm they meet them and that the résumé "clearly reflects this".
  3. Upload one résumé and submit. The careers site accommodates only one résumé per applicant, so it represents you on every Meta application. You can apply to more than one role; Meta states no numeric cap.
  4. Watch your Career Profile. It shows upcoming interviews, role-specific prep guides, a CoderPad practice environment, and later the onboarding checklist. For select roles the first step is a prescreen form sent through it.

The Meta interview loop, stage by stage

  1. Recruiter call. For most roles this is the first step. Meta says it covers your background, experience, long-term goals, and interest in the company.
  2. Technical screen (45 min). Per Meta's initial interview guide: 5 minutes of introductions, 35 minutes of coding, 5 minutes for your questions. Expect one to two problems on CS fundamentals in a collaborative editor such as CoderPad.
  3. Full loop (4 to 6 interviews, 45 min each). Meta's full loop guide lists three interview types: coding, design, and behavioral. Hello Interview reports the usual E4 mix as two coding, one design, one behavioral.
  4. Team match. Not covered in Meta's public guides. Hello Interview reports that since 2023 it happens before the offer, through informal conversations with potential teams, and can add time when no team has a matching opening.
  5. Offer. Your recruiter sends the offer letter.

What Meta screens for, by track

Software engineer: coding

Meta's guide says to expect about two problems in about 40 minutes. The interviewer does not compile your code. Four focus areas are scored: communication, problem solving, coding, and verification. The guide is explicit that Meta does not ask dynamic programming questions. Review arrays, stacks, queues, hash tables, trees, graphs, and heaps instead.

Software engineer: design

One 45-minute interview, in one of two flavors depending on the role. Systems design focuses on distributed systems, scalability, performance, and efficiency. Product architecture focuses on API design, usability, and utility. Both are scored on problem navigation, solution design, technical excellence, and technical communication. Ask your recruiter which one you'll get.

Behavioral

A 45-minute session scored on five areas: resolving conflict, growing continuously, embracing ambiguity, driving results, and communicating effectively. Meta recommends the STAR method and outlining 2–3 major projects ahead of time.

Machine learning engineer and TPM

Meta's ML full loop guide swaps the design round for a 45-minute ML system design interview (ranking, recommendations, personalization), scored on problem navigation, training data, feature engineering, modeling, and evaluation and deployment. The TPM guide lists five 45-minute interviews: technical retrospective, solution design, program sense, partnership, and behavioral.

AI in Meta interviews

Meta's hiring-process FAQ says many of its interviews now include an AI assistant built into the interview environment, and that select roles include an authorized AI assistant within CoderPad. 404 Media first reported the format on July 29, 2025. Hello Interview's E5 guide (updated February 2026) calls it a pilot that replaces one of the onsite coding rounds. Unauthorized outside help, including tools like ChatGPT, is still banned. Ask your recruiter which format applies.

Levels and compensation

levels.fyi tracks Meta software engineers from E3 (entry level) to E9. As of early October 2026 it reports US total compensation of about $182K at E3, $299K at E4, $462K at E5, and $734K at E6, with a median package of $465K. Equity carries more of the package as you move up: the E5 figure is roughly $225K base, $204K stock per year, and $33K bonus. RSUs vest over 4 years, 25% per year, quarterly.

Meta's US postings list a pay range in the form "$X/year to $Y/year + bonus + equity + benefits". That range is base salary only. For how to read it against total compensation, see Silicon Valley salary bands explained.

Visa sponsorship

Meta is one of the largest H-1B sponsors in the US. An NFAP analysis of USCIS data shows 1,555 H-1B petitions approved for initial employment in fiscal year 2025, second only to Amazon, up from 920 in FY 2024 and 735 in FY 2023. The denial rate was 1%. A September 2025 presidential proclamation added a $100,000 fee for new H-1B workers entering from outside the US and has been challenged in court, so confirm on the recruiter call whether your role and situation are eligible. Timeline

Meta's stated figure is about 2 to 3 months end to end. Hello Interview reports 4 to 8 weeks for the E4 process and notes that team matching can extend it. After the loop, Meta gives no fixed decision time; its guides say to follow up with your recruiter if you have heard nothing within a week.

How to position your résumé

  • Tailor to one target role. With one résumé on file, pick the Meta role you want most and write to its description. applinity tailors a résumé per job description from the Meta listings.
  • Mirror the minimum qualifications. Meta asks that the résumé clearly reflect them. State each one in plain words, with the years and the stack.
  • Lead with results. The behavioral round scores "driving results" and asks how you demonstrate impact. Put a number on every project bullet you'd want to be asked about.
  • Keep the format plain. Meta asks for an easy-to-read résumé. Check yours with the free applinity ATS scorer and the ATS résumé optimization guide.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I apply to Meta?

Apply at metacareers.com. Meta runs its own careers site rather than Greenhouse, Workday, or Lever. Meta's hiring-process page says the site holds only one résumé per applicant, so the résumé you upload has to work for every Meta role you apply to.

How long does the Meta interview process take?

Meta's own FAQ says the typical interview process takes about 2 to 3 months and consists of a recruiter conversation, an initial screening, and a full loop interview. Meta does not give an exact estimate for the decision after the loop; its interview guides tell candidates to follow up with the recruiter if they have not heard back within a week.

What is the Meta full loop interview?

For software engineers, Meta's Full Loop Interview Guide describes 4 to 6 interviews of 45 minutes each, covering coding, design, and behavioral. The design interview is either systems design (distributed systems, scalability, performance) or product architecture (API design, usability, utility), depending on the role.

Can I use AI in a Meta coding interview?

Only the assistant Meta provides. Meta's hiring-process page says many of its interviews now include an AI assistant built into the interview environment, and that select roles include an authorized AI assistant within CoderPad. Meta's interview guides still ban unauthorized outside help, including AI tools like ChatGPT. 404 Media first reported the AI-enabled interview format on July 29, 2025.

Does Meta ask dynamic programming questions?

Meta's Software Engineer Full Loop Interview Guide says no: "We do not ask dynamic programming questions so don't spend time prepping for that technique". The same guide lists arrays, stacks, queues, hash tables, trees, graphs, and heaps as the data structures to review, and says to expect about two problems in about 40 minutes.

Can I apply to more than one role at Meta?

Yes. Meta's FAQ says you can apply to more than one role and does not state a numeric cap. It asks that you meet the minimum qualifications for each role and highlight the relevant skills on your résumé. Because the site keeps one résumé per applicant, a tight cluster of similar roles works better than a spread.

Does Meta sponsor H-1B visas?

Yes. A National Foundation for American Policy analysis of the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub shows Meta Platforms had 1,555 H-1B petitions approved for initial employment in fiscal year 2025, second only to Amazon and up from 920 in fiscal year 2024, with a 1% denial rate. Meta also had 4,740 approvals for continuing employment that year.

What are Meta's engineering levels and pay?

levels.fyi tracks Meta software engineers from E3 to E9. As of early October 2026 it reports US total compensation of about $182K at E3, $299K at E4, $462K at E5, and $734K at E6, with a median package of $465K. Meta's US job postings list a base salary range only; bonus and equity sit on top.

How does team matching work at Meta?

Meta's public interview guides do not describe team matching. Interview-prep firm Hello Interview reports that Meta changed its process in 2023 to require team matching before extending an offer, through informal conversations with potential teams, rather than after joining through Bootcamp. Ask your recruiter how it works for your role.
